Solar Panel Cleaning After Wildfire Smoke: What Bay Area Homeowners Need to Know

April 15, 20266 min readBy Hurst Solar Panel Cleaning

California wildfire season has become a year-round concern for Bay Area homeowners. Beyond the obvious air quality impacts, wildfire smoke has a significant and often overlooked effect on solar panel efficiency. Here's what you need to know about protecting your solar investment during and after wildfire events.

How Wildfire Smoke Affects Solar Panels

Dual Impact: Reduced Sunlight + Surface Deposits

Smoke affects panels in two ways simultaneously: it reduces the amount of sunlight reaching panels (atmospheric effect) AND deposits fine particles directly on panel surfaces (soiling effect).

Ultra-Fine Particles Penetrate Deeper

Wildfire smoke particles are much finer than regular dust — often less than 2.5 microns. These particles penetrate the microscopic texture of panel glass more deeply and are harder to remove than regular dust.

Ash Deposits Are Particularly Damaging

Ash from wildfires contains alkaline compounds that can etch panel glass if left in contact with moisture. Post-fire cleaning should happen as soon as air quality permits.

Efficiency Losses Can Be Severe

During major smoke events like the 2018 Camp Fire, Bay Area solar systems saw efficiency drops of 20-30% from atmospheric effects alone. Surface deposits add additional losses after the smoke clears.

When to Clean After a Smoke Event

1

Wait for AQI to improve

Don't clean while air quality is still poor (AQI > 100). Wait until AQI returns to moderate levels before scheduling cleaning.

2

Clean within 2 weeks of smoke clearing

Ash deposits become harder to remove the longer they sit. Schedule cleaning within 2 weeks of the smoke event ending.

3

Use purified water only

Tap water will leave mineral deposits on top of smoke residue. Purified water is essential for post-smoke cleaning.

4

Check efficiency after cleaning

Monitor your system for 1-2 weeks after cleaning to verify efficiency has returned to normal. If not, there may be panel damage.

High-Risk Areas for Wildfire Smoke Impact

While all Bay Area cities are affected by major wildfire events, some areas face higher risk due to proximity to fire-prone regions:
