Just Got Solar Panels? Your First-Year Cleaning & Maintenance Guide

April 15, 20267 min readBy Hurst Solar Panel Cleaning

Congratulations on your new solar system! You've made a great investment. Now the question is: how do you protect it? Many new solar owners are surprised to learn that their installer's maintenance advice is often minimal — and that proper cleaning is essential from day one. Here's your complete first-year guide.

Month 1-3: The Baseline Period

Your first few months are critical for establishing a performance baseline. Your monitoring app will show you what "clean panel" output looks like — this is your reference point for detecting future efficiency losses. During this period:

  • Set up your monitoring app and check it weekly
  • Note your system's output on clear, sunny days — this is your baseline
  • Take photos of your panels from the ground for future comparison
  • Identify any bird activity near your panels early

When to Schedule Your First Professional Cleaning

Installed in spring/summer (March-September)

First cleaning at 6-8 weeks

Peak dust season — panels get dirty fast

Installed in fall/winter (October-February)

First cleaning at 10-12 weeks

Rain provides some cleaning; less dust accumulation

Heavy bird activity noticed

First cleaning at 4-6 weeks

Bird droppings cause permanent damage if left too long

Near agriculture or construction

First cleaning at 4-6 weeks

Heavy dust accumulation in these environments

Should You Get Bird Proofing Right Away?

If you see birds on or near your panels within the first few weeks, we strongly recommend getting bird proofing installed before they establish nesting habits. Once birds nest under panels, they become extremely territorial and difficult to deter. Early installation is much easier and less expensive than dealing with an established colony.

This is especially important in high bird-pressure areas like Antioch, Brentwood, Livermore, and anywhere near the Bay shoreline.

Your First-Year Maintenance Calendar

Month 4-6

Month 7-9

Third cleaning (peak summer dust season)

Year-end cleaning + full inspection, review annual performance
